Mike Golub: Sports Business Executive, Entrepreneur and Industry Leader

Mike Golub is a veteran sports business executive, entrepreneur, and advisor whose career has spanned more than three decades and some of the most recognizable organizations in professional sports. His experience encompasses professional soccer, basketball, hockey, sports marketing, venue development, sponsorship, fan engagement, emerging leagues, and international sports business.

Today, Golub serves as Chief Operating Officer of Football.Enterprises Inc., a global football investment platform focused on building an interconnected ecosystem across club ownership, sports technology, and early-stage player development. He joined the company as COO in 2026, bringing decades of experience building, operating, and growing sports organizations.

In his role with Football.Enterprises, Golub helps oversee operational strategy and execution across the company’s portfolio of football clubs, technology initiatives, and player-development activities. The position represents a natural extension of a career spent examining what makes sports organizations successful both on and beyond the field.

Football.Enterprises is designed around a global approach to football while recognizing the importance of the individual identities and communities surrounding its clubs. The company’s model seeks to connect organizations through resources, capital, technology, and operational expertise while allowing clubs to maintain the characteristics that make them distinctive. For Golub, the opportunity draws upon experience accumulated across numerous leagues, markets, and stages of organizational growth.

Building Professional Soccer Organizations

Mike Golub is particularly well known for his work in professional soccer. He spent 13 years as President of Business for the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns, helping oversee a period of significant development for professional soccer in Portland. He played an important role in preparing the Timbers for their entry into Major League Soccer in 2011. Building a successful professional sports organization involves much more than putting a team on the field. Ticketing, sponsorships, marketing, community relationships, venue operations, branding, and the overall fan experience all contribute to the long-term strength of a club. Mike Golub’s work helped establish the Timbers as a prominent organization within MLS and contributed to the development of a passionate supporter culture surrounding the club. His soccer experience also extends deeply into the women’s game.

Mike Golub helped launch the Portland Thorns in 2013 and was a founding board member of the National Women’s Soccer League. The Thorns developed into a major presence in women’s professional soccer, demonstrating the potential for women’s clubs to build dedicated audiences and substantial commercial operations. His contributions to professional soccer have included recognition as a two-time MLS Executive of the Year. That background is especially relevant to Golub’s current work. Football has become increasingly interconnected internationally, requiring executives to understand both the universal business principles behind professional sports and the individual cultures surrounding clubs and their supporters.

Experience Across the NBA, WNBA and NHL

Long before his work in Portland, Golub was gaining experience across several areas of the professional sports industry. At the NBA, he headed the league’s Events Division. His work included initiatives connected to NBA All-Star events, international games, the NBA Draft, and other league experiences designed to bring fans closer to professional basketball. Golub was also part of the startup team involved in developing the original business plan for the WNBA. That experience gave him an early perspective on the challenges and opportunities involved in establishing a new professional sports league and developing an audience around an emerging sports property.

He later served in executive roles with the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies and was involved in the franchise’s relocation to Memphis. His responsibilities included work associated with the development of FedExForum, giving him experience with the complicated relationship between professional franchises, venues, communities, and long-term business strategy.

Mike Golub subsequently joined the New York Rangers as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Operations, adding one of the NHL’s most established franchises to his professional background. He has also served as Chief Operating Officer of the Portland Trail Blazers, further expanding a career that has allowed him to view the professional sports business from league, franchise, venue, and market perspectives.

Sports Marketing and Nike

Mike Golub’s career has not been limited to teams and leagues. During his time at Nike, he served as Director of Sports Entertainment and worked at the intersection of athletics, entertainment, branding, and marketing. His experience included work involving prominent athletes and sports properties at a time when the relationship between individual athletes, brands, and popular culture was becoming increasingly important.

That experience provided another perspective on the sports industry: understanding not simply how teams operate, but how athletes and sports organizations build connections with audiences.

Marketing and storytelling have since become fundamental components of modern sports business. Teams now communicate with supporters through websites, streaming platforms, social media, mobile applications, live events, and other digital channels. Golub’s career has unfolded alongside that transformation.

Developing the Places Where Fans Experience Sports

Venue development represents another significant component of Mike Golub’s professional experience. He has been involved with major projects including FedExForum in Memphis and Providence Park in Portland. These projects illustrate how sports facilities have evolved beyond places where games simply happen.

Modern stadiums and arenas influence sponsorship opportunities, ticketing, hospitality, food and beverage programs, community events, premium experiences, and the overall relationship between a team and its supporters. Golub’s experience with venue projects complements his broader focus on fan engagement. The physical environment surrounding a game can play an important role in determining how supporters experience a sports organization and whether they remain connected over time.

Entrepreneurship, Emerging Sports and Innovation

Golub has continued to explore new areas of the sports industry throughout his career. He founded Bottlenose Sports, an advisory and investment platform reflecting his broader interest in sports entrepreneurship and emerging opportunities within the industry. His experience has also included serving as President of Business for SlamBall, an alternative sport combining elements of basketball with trampolines and full-contact competition. Working with an emerging sports property presents a different set of challenges from operating an established franchise. New sports must introduce audiences to their format, establish recognizable personalities, build media distribution, develop sponsorship opportunities, and turn initial curiosity into lasting fandom.

Mike Golub has also been involved with organizations exploring technology and innovation within sports, areas that are becoming increasingly important as teams search for new ways to understand and engage their audiences.

A Career Focused on the Business Behind Sports

Across Mike Golub’s career, a consistent theme has been building the infrastructure that allows sports organizations to grow. Successful teams and leagues depend on much more than competition. They require strong operations, recognizable brands, meaningful relationships with supporters, sustainable revenue, effective partnerships, appropriate venues, and a clear understanding of their communities. Golub has worked across each of these areas.

His career has taken him from league offices and global brands to established franchises, startup leagues, emerging sports, women’s professional sports, venue projects, and international football initiatives. That range has provided him with a broad view of how the sports business evolves and how organizations can adapt as audiences, technologies, and markets change.

Golub earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College before receiving his MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. He has also shared his industry experience through teaching and guest lectures at universities and business schools. Now, as Chief Operating Officer of Football.Enterprises, Golub is applying that background to another stage of the sports industry’s evolution.

The global football landscape continues to change as clubs explore new investment structures, technology becomes increasingly integrated into sports operations, and organizations look for better ways to identify and develop players while engaging supporters around the world. Mike Golub’s role places him at the intersection of those developments. After decades spent helping leagues, franchises, venues, brands, and emerging sports properties grow, his work with Football.Enterprises brings those experiences together within a global football platform. From professional basketball and hockey to men’s and women’s soccer, sports marketing, venue development, and emerging sports, Mike Golub’s career reflects a longstanding focus on the business systems that help sports organizations connect with their audiences and prepare for sustainable growth.
